Science and Research

Science needs Experimentation before a fact is established.

Yesterday we had a visit on the vegetable growing tract of the Panchayat and could found on interesting protuberance on Cowpea. The peas after first harvest develop a Gall like swelling of the flower stalk and leads to the cessation of fruit setting there by decreasing the yield. Researchers in Agricultural Science have to focus on this issue

POLYHOUSES

Often one finds it difficult to control diseases in advanced stage and as it is rightly said that prevention is better than cure. It is same with case of fungal disease affecting Vegetable cow pea .Locally known as Karivally. The occurrence usually noticed during rainy season.
The main symptom exhibited by the plant is the discolouration of green stem in to black one. This results in reduction in yield to the tune of 20to 30%. Even though recommendation exists for control of spraying Dithane. M.45 , Treatment of seeds with fungicides etc.The result is not promising. As Vegetable Cow pea fetches good price in Kerala markets ,not below Rs. 20per Kg the construction of low-cost polyhoues which protects the crop from rain can be easily adopted and can save crop from the fungus to certain extend.

BLEACHING POWDER

Searching an antibiotic for application in agricultural field is cumbersome. Mr. Asari was cultivating banana for the last 20 years in leased land and finding livelihood in it. He had a problem of uprooting banana when it reaches maturity. It has no other symptoms like insects or nematodes. I inspected the plot and found this was due to bacterial infection. I suggested application of 10 gm of Bleaching powder to the plant growing to its vicinity. Absolutely it clicked and he was happy. Bleaching powder has germicidal properties which we may employ in the application in our wells.

N.P.K

For proper growth of plants Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium (N, P, K) are needed in adequate amounts in soil. One of the farmers who had cultivated about 1000 banana plants came to me and told that he is going to loose his crop ,a remedy should be given. I immediately rushed to his plot. The symptom is that of newly produced leaves are unable to open fully. I could identify the problem as the deficiency of potassium. Later talking with the farmer it was said that he had applied only ammonium phosphate only, a fertilizer contains only nitrogen and phosphorous only. I advised to apply 100 Gm of muriate of potash, a potassium fertilizer per plant twice. He got desired result after three months and was happy over my advice

PRAYER

Yesterday my Agricultural Assistant Mr. Aravind and myself took a journey to the Vellanikkal a place near to Attingal of Trivandrum District. We had a hectic work in our office. He said that sir, the place Vellanikkal is a place of natural beauty and if we spend sometime we will get some relaxation but on condition we should climb the hill. Ok I agreed. After reaching the hilltop I found a temple, where I prayed. My brain was filled with enthusiasm. Besides Devotion I felt that our temples are situated at heights and by climbing over it our blood circulation increases in our brain and body and which will have health benefits.

BLUE

As William Henry Davis said in the poem Leisure, No time to see, in broad daylight,……………we have no time to stand and stare. It was a bright sunny day with a few clouds. But I stared the sky and thought should write on its blue colour

This is due to the scattering of light. As you know the sunlight is white in colour and which is a mixture of colours as in a rainbow. When it enters our atmosphere the blue portion of the colour in the white light get scattered in the atmosphere, which gives the blue colour to the sky in daytime. .

BLACK

Every day we are seeing vehicles running through our street from dawn to dusk, all of them having wheels and tyres. It is seen that all of tyres are of black in colour. Why it is so? As you know it is made from rubber. During the process of manufacture of tyres , carbon black is added for strength of material, which imparts black colour to the tyres.

variations

Yesterday when I met Mr.Anilkumar S.G who is a specialist in plant breeding we had serious discussion about variations. He remarked that variation is the beauty of nature and the principle of nature. I supported him. We can see people taking part in a march past are alike but closely observing different. Variation is a must. Without which evolution is not possible. How it is happening in organisms? It is by mutation, the changes affecting in the Genes, the genetic material in an organism.
